5 Essential Oils For Nerve Pain

428

Essential oils have been used for thousands of years to safely and effectively diminish pain. Unlike medications, which offer temporary relief with many side effects, these oils don’t cause dependency, require escalating doses, or any  unwanted

Traditional Treatments for Neuropathy

The most prescribed drugs for neuropathy include Gabapentin, Lyrica, Cymbalta, Amitriptyline, and Nortriptyline. In some cases, doctors may prescribe Tramadol, an opioid narcotic.

All these drugs come with a long list of side effects. Fortunately, there are safer alternatives to treat neuropathy pain and symptoms.

5 Essential Oils for Nerve Pain

Essential oils have been used for centuries for many therapeutic benefits, including pain relief. Research now validates the many benefits of essentials oils for relieving pain and inflammation.

Clinical studies uncover five essential oils for alleviating and managing nerve pain.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Studies show that peppermint oil possesses analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. It also suggests that the active compound menthol interacts with the body through topical application in several ways to alleviate nerve pain.

First, the cooling sensation on the skin’s surface stimulates the nerve cell endings that initiate pain. Then, it desensitizes them by activating a protein called TRPM8. The protein distracts the brain from acknowledging pain signals. This is known as the “gate control theory” of pain.

Secondly, menthol acts as a vasodilator, widening blood vessels to increase blood flow. The increased blood flow brings more oxygen and nutrients to the damaged nerves, promoting healing and reducing pain.

A study in the “Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research,” found that the application of topical menthol significantly reduced neuropathic pain in patients with diabetic neuropathy.

Wintergreen Essential Oil

Research shows that wintergreen oil contains 85-99% methyl salicylate, a potent anti-inflammatory agent. Wintergreen inhibits pro-inflammatory compounds called prostaglandins and improves blood flow and circulation to injured nerves.

Due to its high methyl salicylate concentration, wintergreen distracts the brain from deeper pain signals, temporarily relieving pain. Clinical studies identified it as a potent natural analgesic (pain reducer).

Helichrysum Essential Oil

Helichrysum oil has several properties, including:

  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Analgesic
  • Antioxidant
  • Regenerative properties

Certain compounds in this oil reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and pro-inflammatory prostaglandins like (COX) and Lox enzymes, which induce and exacerbate pain signals.

Helichrysum’s rich antioxidant profile neutralizes free radicals and reduces oxidative stress to alleviate nerve pain. It also reduces the amount of pain signals that reach the brain by interacting with pain receptors and neurotransmitters in the nervous system, reducing nerve pain intensity.

Studies also show that helichrysum promotes tissue repair and nerve regeneration.

Compounds such as nerol and other terpenoids protect the nerves in the nervous system. Studies found that terpenoids restore blood-brain barrier integrity, protecting the brain from neurological disorders.

Nerol, specifically, promotes the survival and function of nerve cells while protecting the cell membranes and supporting mitochondrial function. Some studies suggest that nerol stimulates neurogenesis, meaning new nerve growth.

Marjoram Essential Oil

Marjoram essential oil contains several bioactive compounds to support nerve cell repair and regeneration. Key compounds include:

  • Terpenes
  • Phenols
  • Esters
  • Cineole

These compounds have potent anti-inflammatory effects, reducing neuroinflammation. They also provide strong antioxidants, neutralizing free radicals and protecting nerves from oxidative stress.

Marjoram essential oil contains bioactive compounds that support nerve cell repair and regeneration. Key compounds include:

  • Terpenes
  • Phenols
  • Esters
  • Cineole

These compounds hold strong anti-inflammatory effects, reducing neuroinflammation. The compounds also have strong antioxidant properties to neutralize free radicals and protect nerves from oxidative stress and other toxins.

Most importantly, marjoram decreases nerve pain intensity by desensitizing pain receptors in both peripheral and central nerves. It also stimulates the release of brain neurotransmitters like serotonin, endorphins, and noradrenaline, which help decrease pain perception.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender oil, one of the most well-studied oils, provides analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects.

Compounds in this oil, like linalool and linalyl acetate, have strong analgesic properties and block nerve pain signals. Research shows that lavender oil’s anti-inflammatory properties reduce neuroinflammation, decreasing nerve pain and symptoms.

A 2015 study found that topically applying diluted lavender essential oil relieves pain equally to opioid medication tramadol with none of the side effects. Another study in 2012 found inhaling lavender reduces the severity of migraine headaches.

In 2024, a study showed the inhalation of lavender oil reduces the quality, severity, and intensity of postherpetic neuralgia, the nerve pain after a shingles outbreak.

In November of 2023, Dr. Coppola struggled with a shingles outbreak. Since he didn’t want to take drugs, he took Nuphoria cm Rapid Relief Pain Cream, which includes lavender oil. The doctors knew it helped with neuropathy pain but were amazed to see the results first hand for shingles pain.

He had to apply the formula every hour, but it provided sustained relief, even if it didn’t completely eliminate the pain. Watch our YouTube video, Nerve Doctor Struck with Shingles, to learn more about how Dr. Coppola defeated his shingles outbreak.

Furthermore, a clinical study revealed that lavender boosts GABA production in the brain, diminishing abnormal nerve impulses and decreasing nerve pain signals. GABA also reduces neuroinflammation and nerve pain by lowering cortisol levels.

Lavender oil also improves sleep quality. Studies found that inhaling lavender promotes deeper sleep cycles. For neuropathy sufferers who struggle to sleep due to pain, we recommend putting a few drops of lavender in a diffuser and letting it run while you sleep.

Essential oils provide many benefits for reducing pain in neuropathy and chronic pain patients. We highly recommend using essential oils to manage and conquer pain.
