How to Use Essential Oils for Pain Relief

213

Essential oils like wintergreen, peppermint, helichrysum, marjoram, and lavender provide pain relief, but different methods offer different levels of relief.

How to Use Essential Oils for Pain Relief

Essential oils can be inhaled or applied topically. If applying topically, always dilute an essential oil with a carrier oil.

Essential oils can irritate the skin when applied directly. Carrier oils dilute them and help penetrate the skin. We recommend

  • Almond oil
  • Jojoba
  • Coconut oil
  • Argan oil

Any of these may be used as a carrier oil.

However, inhalation provides the fastest absorption into the body. When inhaled, essential oils are processed in several ways.

First, olfactory receptors in the nose send direct signals to the forebrain through the olfactory nerve. The forebrain processes the signals from the essential oils to decrease pain and inflammation.

Second, the mucous membranes in nasal passageways and the lungs carry essential oil molecules to the bloodstream, giving the body the fastest route of absorption.

There are two methods of inhalation therapy: the ultrasonic diffuser and the nebulizing diffuser.

Ultrasonic units, or steam diffusers, are cheaper. They use a mixture of water and essential oils, creating vibrations that break the essential oils down and distribute the diluted version into the air. If you use this unit, only use distilled or filtered water and clean it regularly to prevent mold build-up.

Nebulizing models, however, use only pure essential oil. They pressurize air to distribute a more potent, undiluted oil into the air.

We recommend ultrasonic units for mild neuropathy symptoms. If your symptoms are severe, we recommend a Nebulizer. While it is more expensive, it provides a more potent therapeutic effect.

Are Diffused Oils Pet Friendly?

Despite the benefits, diffused essential oils can be hazardous for cats because they lack an enzyme in their liver that breaks down the oils, and they rapidly absorb them.

You can still use an essential oil if you own a cat, but ensure no cats are in the room.

Dogs can metabolize most essential oils, but certain ones are poisonous. If you own a dog, keep them away from:

  • Tea tree oil
  • Wintergreen
  • Peppermint
  • Pennyroyal
  • Cinnamon
  • Citrus
  • Ylang ylang

What Brands of Essential Oils Are Safe?

Firstly, use a high-quality essential oil (steam-distilled or cold-pressed). Never use an oil extracted by a solvent because companies use chemicals like hexane or petroleum ethers, which are toxic and carcinogenic.

Essential oils are not chemical-free when the labels state pure, organic, all-natural, or non-GMO. Even with the labels, companies still use hexane as an extraction method. The website should say “Steam Distillation” or “Cold-Pressed.”

Some brands that Dr. Coppola and Dr. Monteiro recommend and personally use include:

However, these companies are not associated with the Nerve Doctors or Nuphoria cm. Please research to determine the best choice for your health.

How Much of Each Essential Oil for Pain Relief?

When dealing with peripheral neuropathy, combining a few essential oils is more effective for symptom control than a single essential oil.

If using a nebulizer unit, we recommend using an empty essential oil bottle to combine the oils. Here are a few recipes using a 15 ml essential oil bottle:

  • 64 drops of peppermint oil
  • 44 drops of wintergreen oil
  • 40 drops of helichrysum oil
  • 36 drops of lavender oil

No carrier oils are required for this recipe when using a nebulizer.

For steam diffusers, we recommend:

  • 2 oz of distilled or filtered water
  • 10 drops of peppermint
  • 10 drops of helichrysum
  • 5 drops of wintergreen
  • 4 drops of lavender

For most patients, we recommend utilizing both inhalation and topical application. When applying essential oil to the skin, always dilute it in a carrier oil first. Generally, use one ounce of carrier oil for every eighteen drops of essential oil. The dilution can be stronger or weaker, depending on your tolerance.

Above all, always do a skin patch test to ensure you do not react. Here are a couple of recipes for application:

  • 1 ounce of carrier oil
  • 7 drops of peppermint
  • 6 drops of wintergreen
  • 3 drops of lavender
  • 2 drops of helichrysum

Another recipe includes:

  • 1 ounce of carrier oil
  • 9 drops of helichrysum
  • 9 drops of marjoram

Using either recipe, rub into affected areas as often as necessary.

Rapid Relief Pain Cream for Nerve Pain

After working with patients with neuropathy for many years, Dr. Monteiro and Dr. Coppola realized that most people struggle with mixing the oils themselves or do not enjoy experimenting to find the best fit.

After a long development period, they created the Rapid Relief Pain Cream. The formula effectively battles nerve, muscle, and joint pain from neuropathy and arthritis.

Using only wild-harvested and organic oils that are steam distilled, the formula contains a combination of six essential oils along with carrier oils known for regenerative properties. This formula is for anyone looking for a combination without the hassle of mixing themselves.

Essential oils are proven champions, offering an effective and gentle solution to reduce nerve pain and restore quality of life without the risks and side effects of pharmaceutical drugs.

Peppermint, wintergreen, helichrysum, marjoram, and lavender possess remarkable properties to soothe inflamed nerves, promote healing, alleviate pain, and assist in regeneration.
