Suffering with the Signs & Symptoms Of Peripheral Neuropathy?

  • Burning, Numbness, Tingling
  • Sharp, Shooting Pain
  • Cramping
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Loss of Balance
  • Loss of Sleep
  • Pain or Difficulty Walking
  • Irritable, Moody, Depressed

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms in your feet, legs or hands, it’s wise to seek medical attention from a leading neuropathy specialist before your condition get progressively worse.

You’re Not Alone

More than 20 million people suffer with neuropathy. In fact, 1 in every 10 adults over the age of 30 suffers with Neuropathic pain.

Patients suffering with neuropathy are told, “There is no cure and once you have neuropathy – it’s permanent; you just need to learn to live with it”.

To make matters worse, patients are being given numerous medications to treat their neuropathy pain, such as Neurontin® (gabapentin), Lyrica®, Cymbalta®, NORCO®, etc. The problem with this approach is that the medications do nothing to heal the nerves. At best, they only mask the pain, while the neuropathy continues to worsen.

& Successfully Reverse Nerve Damage.

Why We Are Different

The fundamental difference between our treatment and conventional medical treatment is that conventional medicine merely masks your pain; whereas, our treatment approach at the San Antonio Neuropathy Center is focused on identifying the underlying cause of your neuropathy and correcting the problem.

If you simply mask the pain with medications, rest assured, your neuropathy will get progressively worse with each passing year. As your neuropathy progresses, it can become very debilitating as you begin to lose your balance, strength, and normal sensory perception.

Evaluation

Proper treatment begins with the correct diagnosis. I have found that many of the neuropathy cases that I have evaluated over the years are diagnosed with “idiopathic neuropathy” or simply stated, neuropathy of unknown cause. In reality, there are many known causes of neuropathy (See Causes of Neuropathy) and a diagnosis of idiopathic neuropathy in my opinion is unacceptable.

At the San Antonio Neuropathy Center, your evaluation begins by meeting with one of our doctors, who specializes in neuropathy care. A thorough medical history is completed, taking as much time as necessary to unravel all the contributing factors causing your neuropathy.

Treatment

Although there is no cookie cutter treatment protocol, there are some basic treatments procedures that are used when working with nerve damage including the following:

1. Laser Treatment

There are many different forms of near infrared lasers (NIR) on the market. The pricing on NIR lasers can vary significantly from $100 up to $20,000 dollars. Before you run out and purchase a hundred dollar NIR laser, it’s important to realize that not all NIR’s have the same ability to repair a damaged peripheral nerve; therefore, it’s important to be familiar with the therapeutic benefits and differences of infrared lasers.

In order to elicit nerve repair in peripheral nerves, the infrared light wavelength must be between 800 nm – 1100 nm. This range of wavelength allows for penetration of 4-6 inches deep within the tissue. Medical evidence shows that NIR triggers Nitric Oxide (NO) release, found to be extremely beneficial for neuropathy sufferers.

Benefits of Nitric Oxide (NO)

  • Increases blood flow to injured or damaged nerves.
  • Increases circulation, oxygen and nutrient delivery to nerves
  • Stimulates proper nerve transmission
  • Decreases pain by stimulating endorphin production
  • Decreases muscle spasm
  • Stimulates cellular reproduction
  • Stimulates the production of collagen
  • Increases lymphatic system activity

3. Peripheral Nervous System Reboot (PNS Reboot)

Unfortunately, it’s not enough to simply repair a damaged or injured nerve. Scientists have discovered that over time, certain nerve pathways become ‘burned in’, so that when the brain encounters a certain stimulus, it will react by firing the same way it did the last time it encountered that stimulus.

It’s common for peripheral nerves, once healed, to continue sending jumbled up messages, merely out of habit.  As a result, the peripheral neuropathy sufferer may no longer have pain but may still lack balance and coordination, making them susceptible to falls. So, the final stage to healing the peripheral nerve is restoring proper communication pathways between the brain and the nerves of the feet or hands. This is imperative in order to return a person back to normal function.

We prescribe very specific exercises to help re-establish the communication between the brain and the feet. The scientific term for this type of exercise is called proprioceptive training.
