Neuropathy Recovery Guide for Nerve Repair

Europe and Asia have used various techniques for nerve repair for over 30 years. Emerging science shows that you can take significant steps toward reversing peripheral neuropathy with the right nutrients and cutting-edge therapies. 

Critical Nutrients for Nerve Repair

Studies have revealed that there are nutrients which provide the building blocks for the repair and regeneration of nerve cells such as:

  • R-Alpha Lipoic Acid
  • Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate (P5P)

  • Methylcobalamin
  • Benfotiamine
  • Acetyl-L-Carnitine

When we created our nerve support formulas, Nuphoria cm Gold and Nerve Defense, we relied on the research findings that demonstrated a decrease in neuropathy symptoms and improved function . However, our intend was not to create the “best nerve support on the market.” In fact, we used the formula only on our patients within our neuropathy clinics but didn’t release it to the public until 10 years later.

Photobiomodulation for Nerve Repair

With over two decades of working with peripheral neuropathy, we found photobiomodulation (PBM) makes an enormous difference, especially for severe neuropathy or chronic cases spanning 5 years or longer. 

This therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to penetrate the skin and stimulate nerve repair. Nerves are the slowest healing tissue in the body, taking up to two years to fully repair. Photobiomodulation considerably speeds up recovery time.

Since the 1960s, PBM has gained attention due to its impact on wound healing. By the 1980s, its focus had shifted to its ability to enhance peripheral nerve regeneration, reduce nerve pain, and improve overall function. 

PBM enhances the mitochondrial function of nerve cells to promote nerve regeneration, reduce inflammation, and improve blood flow for nerve repair. 

In our clinics, when we combined  our nerve repair formulas (critical nutrients for nerve repair) along with PBM, the impact on peripheral nerve recovery was remarkable.

Exercises for Nerve Repair

  • Integrating specific exercises into your routine that focus on enhancing muscle strength.
  • Improving range of motion.
  • Boosting balance and proprioception.

When peripheral nerves are damaged, muscles weaken, and the body’s proprioceptive systems often disconnect. Proprioception is the body’s ability to sense where it is in space without looking, like an internal GPS for the arms, legs, and other body parts. 

For example, most people can close their eyes and touch their nose, mouth, or any other part of their body without looking. It helps them move smoothly and maintain balance.

We created exercise videos to help improve strength, range of motion, balance, and coordination. We recommend incorporating these exercises into your routine at least five days a week to maximize recovery. The exercises are suitable even for those who are unstable on their feet. 

Anti-Inflammatory Diet for Nerve Repair

The last part of a complete neuropathy recovery comes from incorporating an anti-inflammatory diet. The diet plays a significant role in healing nerves by addressing chronic inflammation, a huge factor in nerve damage.

An anti-inflammatory diet focuses on eliminating foods such as grains with gluten, sugary foods and beverages, processed meats, and trans fats. It incorporates healthy foods such as:

  • Vegetables and fruits that are high in antioxidants
  • Omega-3 fatty acids
  • Whole grains without gluten (rice, quinoa, and buckwheat)
  • Lean protein
  • Potent herbs and spices

The diet creates an environment in the body that decreases nerve inflammation, reduces pain and discomfort, improves blood flow, lowers blood sugar levels, and prevents further nerve damage. 

Focusing on foods that fight inflammation and avoiding ones that promote it allows you to take a step toward recovery from peripheral neuropathy.

Obstacles that Slow Recovery

We covered the key components required for nerve recovery but equally important is to know what may slow down or halt your recovery. We have found the following to have a significant impact on your recovery:

Low Vitamin D

Vitamin D levels below 50 ng/dL on a lab test can slow the nerve’s healing potential. Optimally, we recommend vitamin D levels of 60 ng/dL or higher. Simple lab tests should show your levels.

Medication

Studies show many medications are linked with causing nerve damage or worsening symptoms. These medications include,

  • Statins for lower cholesterol
  • High blood pressure medications like amlodipine, felodipine, verapamil, and diltiazem
  • Antibiotics like Cipro and Levaquin
  • Diabetes medications like metformin

Uncontrolled Glucose Levels

Uncontrolled glucose levels may be the next roadblock to recovery, whether pre-diabetic or full diabetic; elevated glucose levels damage the nerves. 

Taking a complete nerve support formula and following an anti-inflammatory diet should help maintain lower glucose levels. Several key ingredients in the nerve support formulas reduce elevated glucose and lower hemoglobin A1C levels. 

Chronic Alcohol Intake

Most people do not know the severe ramifications of chronic alcohol intake on nerve recovery. You do not need to be an alcoholic for it to hinder progress. 

If you drink alcohol of any kind, whether beer, wine, or hard liquor, you may prevent your nerves from repairing. Any more than two drinks weekly can hinder the progress–weekly, not daily.

When you dwell on negativity, your stress levels increase, and the body releases stress hormones like cortisol, which can worsen inflammation and slow the repair of damaged nerves. 

However, you can rewire your brain for positivity and healing. While it is not an overnight process, consciously choosing hope and practicing positivity creates a mental environment that supports recovery.
